Favorite Tycoon-Type Titles?

Postby PSXtreme » Sat Apr 14, 2012 5:09 pm

I've always enjoyed the Tycoon types of games, even though I'm not an extensive PC gamer. Currently I've started screwing around with Railroad Tycoon 3. Yeah, it's a bit on the older side, but not too old that Widows 7 might have issues. I was just wondering what some of more favorite tycoon type games that the members might have. As you are aware, it's usually a hit/miss with most of the PC games. Either they are great...or they suck.

I've played Car Tycoon...it was bleh...Oil Tycoon...also bleh....Roller Coaster Tycoon 3...not bad...just looking for some fresh interaction.

Opinions?

I, too, love the tycoon/manager sims. Sim City is great, as is Roller Coaster Tycoon. My favs though are the hybrids, like Dungeon Keeper 2. Def need to check that out.

If you like Railroad Tycoon 3 then I would recommend trying Railroad Tycoon 2. It is the best in the series. It has more depth and a lot bigger maps. The problem they ran into with 3 was that they decided to make it a 3D game. They had to make the maps smaller so that the computers of the time could handle it.

Rollercoaster Tycoon was a great game too. The first one in the series is my favorite there. I love the 3D in RC 3 but the game mechanics are kind of whacky. It is a little less of a simulator. For example, people will ride coasters that do 9 or 10 Gs.

The Simcity series is a tycoon type game and it is great if you want a simulation of a city. I think Simcity 3 was the bast in the series. Simcity 4 is alright if you download some of the user made mods that fix some of the basic problems with the game.

If you want to try more city builders then I would recommend Civcity Rome.

I found this site http://hawkdawg.com/rrt/rrt3/rrt3.htm which had the coast to coast expansion pack along with the 1.05 and 1.06 updates for RRT3. All three work without issue and are free to d/l, however make sure to add them in their proper order as prescribed on the page. They add some depth to RRT3 and even have the entire US map available. I have RRT2 for the PSOne, but I have a glitched copy that locks up if you progress a certain point. Guess it was a bad CD burn by the manufacturer. I need to get myself another copy down at the used game store.

I've tried Ski Resort Tycoon 2 and have a couple of the RCT games, but I just didn't get grabbed as much as with RRT3. I kept making too thrilling rides that would cause the excitement ratings to roll over and just became a pain in the ass for finishing levels. I've also picked up a SimCity multipak of games, but they also just seem to loose something as you play them more.

I'll be looking out for a copy of that CivCity Rome. Ancient history is something right up my alley.

The best SimCity game is Simcity 3000 Unlimited (2000 with all the expansions/add-ons)
Societies was fun, but was not made by Maxis and lost most of it's true tycoon/management features. It plays more like a city builder and you have 100% control over everything which makes it very easy.
I have Cities XL 2012 and I feel it picks up where Maxis left off before being closed by EA. Check that out, I also hear Anno is good.

I agree that simcity 3000 is the best. The problem I had with it was that I would eventually run out of real estate to zone new stuff. Is there a mod that makes the maps bigger so that you can build a bigger city?

Not that I know of. When this happened to me, I would start a new city, haha

Well, I don't want to start a new city. I want to make a super big one. :) Oh, is there a mod that disables water tower and power plant decay? Micromanaging that gets tedious. I may have to install Simcity 3000. Haven't played it in years. Guessing I will have to jump through a lot of hoops to get it to work on Windows 7 though.

You'd be surprised. Seems Window 7 is much more old program friendly than Vista ever was.
