I am curious...

Remember those days before the "gamer" titles? When you could sit in front of your Nintendo NES all day and no one really thought much of it. Most of the rest of the worlds was doing it too... I mean even our own mother and 5 year old sister's were doing it! (The sister = me.)

Now look at it... it has turned into this huge thing. Competitions, Conventions, Expo's that thousands of people turn up to to experience the new technology awaiting us. But that isn't what I am getting into really in this blog... I am just wondering why the attitude of those days has changed so much. Do you ever realize how most people feel you are only a gamer depending on how good you are at these games?

Okay I am going to touch a subject that most people, including myself, am totally sick of hearing about, and wish it would pass, but it hasn't.

"Girl Gamers"

I have been reading other blogs and threads about this subject. But it can be so annoying being in this "gaming" world, and being treated so differently when I would rather just be treated like any other guy and gamer out there, and I speak for most girls on this one. Just because I am not the best at some games (can't be good at each and every one, sorry), I have been called a "fake" and many other things. Guys are mostly the contributers to this.

Sure, some girls are "attention whores" or w/e (I am not talking about those at this time.) But since when did gaming become only about how good you are besides it just being about fun? So what if I don't do the total best at competitions, I get nervous and there will probably be people out there better then myself. I accept that. But, I thought being a "gamer" meant you just played and enjoyed video games?

"Guy Gamers?"

Okay... so that obviously isn't a title widely used, but have you ever seen fingers pointed at a guy, and him being called a "fake?" Well, I know I haven't. I just wish guys would get over the shock that girls do game, and have been this whole time! The reason it made it so well known is the internet, and it came as a huge shock to guys, and hasn't gone away since. So, the question is, when will it, or will it ever?

I basically wasn't even aware I was a "gamer" until the internet. I have been playing video games pretty much non-stop since I was 5 years old, but until I was online, playing MMO's and surfing gaming sites did I realize that gaming was a society in itself. I remember putting a picture of myself on a gaming site, and being called a "fake" because I was a girl. That was many years ago now, but that day always makes me realize why I saw girls taking pictures of themselves with their gaming equipment, and still do to this day. Is it because we want attention? No, it's because guy's STILL don't believe it otherwise, and it seems to bug them a lot in ways...

Anyways... this subject has grown old over the years, and yet still continues on to this day. But mainly what I am curious about is when did you get the title "real gamer" depending on how good you are?

I have found myself surprised by every "girl gamer" that I meet but only because I have met very few. By gamer I mean someone that plays games no matter what they are. I am not singling out the "hardcore" from the "casual" either. Around me the number of girls who play games is very very few and I say more power to them. The more "gamer girls" the better !

hmm i think one of the main contributers to girl gamers being called a fake, is mainly because in the average persons life they meet girls that don't play video games, but places here you find every one even the girls that do play. And since people that guys meet that are female who game in real life are really low in amount. alot of guys will just presume that when they see a gamer on the internet thats a girl they don't believe they truly game. Theres also the fact that alot of guys will act out as girls on games not only as characters but claim to be girls in real life as well (don't ask me why id wish to know my self) that also pushes to guys not believing that girls auctually game but are just fake guys wanting some thing on a game by acting out as a girl.

Thats how i speculate it, im not argueing im just stating what ive found so far that could make guys not believe that a girls a gamer.

Good read. I only call gamers fake when they "drop 20's or 30's" in a match, yet they can't do it on LAN. Other than that...everyone is a gamer.

Gamers have no gender. If you're a guy and you love games, you're a gamer. If you're a girl and you love games, you're a gamer. Both paths lead to the same place.

Same here. if u play and like to play, ur a gamer

Agreed with navie thats what I think a gamer is.

Excellent blog. You worded everything that I've been thinking nicely. I ask myself the same questions every day it seems.

All are equal in the eyes of the game.

Sounds like someone does not know about the golden age of gaming ^_^

Girls playing games has been a taboo since the birth of gaming, and I don't think its something that is going to go away anytime soon.

It's a stereotype, and for some odd reason, stereotypes can survive the ravages of time.

go figure.

Girl Gamers own all

i support the fight

I would say its kinda like the NBA and the WNBA...

When the WNBA started it was the same thing...Guys didnt like the fact that girls can do the same things that they could and shuned them for it.

I just look at it that way... Eventually (over time ofcourse....ALOT of time) people will get used to it and it wont be that much of a shock.

Thank you for posting this!! Ive been tryin to get more people around me to understand that not only men can be "gamers" in the general term, and too meny people are calling the people that play for pay are gamers. Gamers are into games for the fun and love of it, not just to get some contract.

Though i dont really have any girl gamers around here, i know that you girls can be better, and it dosnt matter to me. If i can find a girl that loves to game, all the better.

People have twisted the meaning of "gamers" into somthing that means a fat, uncept guy in his mid 20's living in his parents basement. I for one tottally dissagree with that, i have several friends that make somwhere in the 6 digit range a year and in their 40's and love to play games. More people need to realise that theres more than just us "geeks" and "nerds" that game.

I am willing to bet if you go out on a stroll through a city, that at least 20% of the people you pass on the street are gamers in some form. From the oldschool tetris, to the new shooters and strategy, games are becoming a world leading industry at this point, and we that are in now, embrace the future, welcome it, and love it.

I really think that gamers in general need to get out more, show our faces, let people know that we are here to stay and lead our people into the furture!

And, due to blisters from chainmaille, and 2 days without sleep, i shall end it with this last statment.

Gamers, men and women, will never be gone, we will always stand tall in the face of scrutiny and never back down!

LONG LIVE THE GAMERS!!!!!!

I agree with these two...we're in that transition period that has been prevalent in countless other social changes. Gaming was always considered a male activity until the internet came around and people started going online and our social network suddenly expanded beyond our neighbourhoods and high schools. Unfortunately, there are those out there who can't accept the transition and/or aren't aware of it yet. But in time, the society that is gamers will eventually either evolve beyond "girl" and "guy" gamer, or it will break off into sub-cultures and remain as such. Either way, I'm already at Navie's conclusion.

See, I use to think girls never gamed cause I never saw it. It was always shown as a guys thing. I never called anyone a fake myself, but it always came as a shock when I found out there was a girl gamer out there.

I am under the mind set like Navie commented. "If you play games and love doing so, you are a gamer. period." I'll also admit that I am not in it for competition either which of course is why most guys don't think women play. It makes us feel better to say that a female gamer is just a really good guy player that's faking it than to admit we just got pwned by a girl.

Hopefully it will all change and drop the first part of the title so it is just "Gamer."

love it, so true.

If you play games and love doing so, you are a gamer. period.
