United States Air Force requests 300 40GB Sony PlayStation 3 Consoles.

Looks like the United States Air Force is looking for some heavy duty technology and it seems like they have turned to Sony for help. The Air Force has recently sent in a Request for Proposal to buy 300 Sony PlayStation 3 consoles from a contractor for a ‘research assessment’ at a decent price.

“The Air Force Research Laboratory is conducting a technology assessment of certain cell processors. The processors in the Sony PlayStation 3 are the only brand on the market that utilizes the specific cell processor characteristics needed for this program at an acceptable cost.”

The vendor opportunity solicitation can be found here: http://www.fbo.gov/spg/USAF/AFMC/AFRLRRS/FA8751-08-R-0016/SynopsisP.html

Whether the PlayStation 3 consoles are for a giant LAN of COD4 or what they claim to be research on the cell processor we are not sure, but what we do know is that they want top grade technology at a lower price. So if you have 300 40GB Sony PlayStation 3 consoles laying around you might want to think about contacting the United States Air Force.

It's defiantely for research. If all 300 are connected up it'll have have serious processing power. There is already a team that have a black hole simulation running on 16 ps3's

Yeah..I read about this. I saw it on Attack of the Show. That sounds like a good idea. Maybe it will make people's lives even safer.

Absolutely! Once those things are wired together, they are capable of the same functions if not more than most top of the line servers. How can the USAF pass up such a price? It's amazing the types of visitors we get at our facility in Rochester, MN just to observe the concept designs behind the processors...from Government, to military, to foreign governments...there's a lot of potential in those processors.
