You Suck!

20 Bumps

Mood: scandalous

“You suck!”, “Damn You!” and other mean slurs are all you seem to hear when you play on Xbox Live or MMO’s nowadays. It seems as though we have been taken over by hateful, mean spirited and immature gamers.

Gamasutra recently put out an article on this very subject, and it has become hot topic among gamers.

So, what happened? I mean, there have always been haters on Internet based games; but there has been a huge increase, to point it’s affecting game sales! Is it because now more than ever we have more children playing along side us? More parents who have no idea what their child is doing, they are just glad that little Jimmy isn’t bugging them; so now we have to put up with their foul mouths and homophobic slurs?

Just last night I was playing Burnout Paradise with some friends, when some teenager joined our game and began to spew the word “f*ck” like he couldn’t control it. Then he told us how stoned he was and how much his sister’s bong cost him. He even asked our advice on where to get pipes from. This kind of behavior is inexcusable, and the fact that we gamers have to put up with it is disgusting. I firmly believe we need to separate child from adult, and limit or even ban kids under a certain age from Internet based games. They are children, talking worse than I have even spoken in my life. Maybe we need a device where their voice can be recorded, and then the parent can go back later and listen to what little Jimmy has been saying.

It’s not just punk-ass kids on Live though — it’s the same guys who start flame wars on forums. It’s grown men who have never had a real live social interaction before, so they hide behind their TV’s or computer monitors and try to mask their pathetic immaturity with anger and hate. Either way, the kids on Live and the socially-retarded adults make gaming online painful, and almost something many of us have come to avoid.

Simple solution: Microsoft, don’t just make games we can play online either open for all or by invite only; how about letting us set it up so we only play with people on our friends list. That allows people I already know to join in a game I am playing, and also stops me from having to send out possibly unwanted game invites. It eliminates the possibility of unwanted Live-ers joining in on my fun and hate-free games.

Most of all, don’t be afraid of the “report” button on your Xbox Live menu… use it, love it. Let Microsoft know that this needs to stop!

Kids and online gaming... a plague that has become something I've adapted to over years of gaming. Unfortunately there won't be a solution. But of course you can already do the friends list thing.

Well. In all honesty. Either they play games so much they don't have friends. So they try to create a second life on games that people will like more. Or they are just those little immature people. But that's why I only play games were you can ignore/ban people. hah.

But good topic and good idea. Kids under the age of 14-15 really shouldn't be able to play online games.

*G-Nitro speaking* I agree, but it all comes down to the fact that it's people using the anonymity of the internet. They know they can hide behind a controller/keyboard and nothing will happent to them. That's why on Xbox Live when someone is spouting any type of hate speech (wether burninatorphobic or racial), I don't just negative rep them, I report them. And that's the problem, not enough people report. I have people tell me all the time, don't report them, just negative them. That's not good enough for me, as I want things done. I want action taken to start deterring this type of problem, so I ask everyone to report these people. The more people to report those spewing hate speech means the quicker action is taken against them by Microsoft.

I voiced my own opinions on the subject pretty close to this on my own blog last month, since it is kinda long I will just post the link to it.

The only reason I feel stuff like this occurs is because people like myself, tend not to say/do anything about the rude people, which makes them think it's cool and okay to act like that.

Sadly, I don't see it changing anytime soon though.

noobz!

You know, from my prospective, i am used to such trash talks over the internet/online games. Its almost the norm for me, personally. I would not enjoy a game of a crowd of people with a monotone-zombie like personalities, that just ruins the MAIN purpose or defeats the purpose of playing ONLINE with different people. Different strokes for different folks as the saying goes, and truer words couldn't be said. Its a verbal/mental and somewhat physical challenge that is EXPECTED online. Trash talking is part of it. I personally think if you don't like such "online" manners or "etiquette", i suggest you to not play Online games at all. I'm not here to defend the ignorant A-hole who curses his mouth off for no reason at all, or the "n-bomb" or any other vulgar words. I'm here to defend the freedom that comes with playing games online. The freedom that is the internet. An unrestricted unmonitored source of communication and information. To put rules and protocols on such freedoms will only hinder the fun factor. Expect the unexpected, thats why EVERY online game has this label "Game Experience May Change During Online Play".

I can understand what your saying. I actually know people personally that love to get on Xbox Live only to piss people off online and get a kick out it as well. Sad to say it's not going to end anytime soon but you can block people like that easily by going to the privicy settings on your gamertag as you can almost block people like that completely.

What about the new people without friends on there list. It also seems you are forgetting the simple solution. Press mute.

unfortunately it wont end. people feel safe knowing that they are not face to face with anyone, so there's a buffer zone.

urrgh, yes, i hate when people do that, but i doubt it will have an end, is part of people's design personallity.
