“You suck!”, “Damn You!” and other mean slurs are all you seem to hear when you play on Xbox Live or MMO’s nowadays. It seems as though we have been taken over by hateful, mean spirited and immature gamers.
Gamasutra recently put out an article on this very subject, and it has become hot topic among gamers.
So, what happened? I mean, there have always been haters on Internet based games; but there has been a huge increase, to point it’s affecting game sales! Is it because now more than ever we have more children playing along side us? More parents who have no idea what their child is doing, they are just glad that little Jimmy isn’t bugging them; so now we have to put up with their foul mouths and homophobic slurs?
Just last night I was playing Burnout Paradise with some friends, when some teenager joined our game and began to spew the word “f*ck” like he couldn’t control it. Then he told us how stoned he was and how much his sister’s bong cost him. He even asked our advice on where to get pipes from. This kind of behavior is inexcusable, and the fact that we gamers have to put up with it is disgusting. I firmly believe we need to separate child from adult, and limit or even ban kids under a certain age from Internet based games. They are children, talking worse than I have even spoken in my life. Maybe we need a device where their voice can be recorded, and then the parent can go back later and listen to what little Jimmy has been saying.
It’s not just punk-ass kids on Live though — it’s the same guys who start flame wars on forums. It’s grown men who have never had a real live social interaction before, so they hide behind their TV’s or computer monitors and try to mask their pathetic immaturity with anger and hate. Either way, the kids on Live and the socially-retarded adults make gaming online painful, and almost something many of us have come to avoid.
Simple solution: Microsoft, don’t just make games we can play online either open for all or by invite only; how about letting us set it up so we only play with people on our friends list. That allows people I already know to join in a game I am playing, and also stops me from having to send out possibly unwanted game invites. It eliminates the possibility of unwanted Live-ers joining in on my fun and hate-free games.
Most of all, don’t be afraid of the “report” button on your Xbox Live menu… use it, love it. Let Microsoft know that this needs to stop!

Kids and online gaming... a plague that has become something I've adapted to over years of gaming. Unfortunately there won't be a solution. But of course you can already do the friends list thing.
