12 Bumps

Mood: I have no mood

Many people know the stereotype that “pretty girls do not game”. We all realize its not true, despite the /b/ tards that still believe that there are no girls on the Internet except for porn. But it seems to be that the ladies of gaming these days put aside their gaming time for makeup and cameras. What is that doing, exactly, for female gamers?

A lot of the ladies of today are determined to prove that not all girls who game are ugly, but since when was this a competition? Girl Gaming lately has become a JOKE. Do you not see that the gaming business is NOT based on looks alone? Did Fata1ity get to be the worlds most recognized FPS gamer just by taking pictures of him licking keyboards?

I want a change in this. GAMING SHOULD BE BASED ON SKILL AND SKILL ALONE. Girls are already competitive enough about their looks, and lets face it, we all know that the best looking girl gets more attention, but what does this prove? Where do fanboys get you exactly?

Tell me ladies, when you started gaming it was out of passion, yes? It was something that you truly enjoyed? Perhaps you started competing and realized that gaming is a sport. Gaming is something that you have to put your time and patience into to maximize your skill. IN NO WAY ARE YOUR LOOKS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN YOU PLAY A GAME. It’s all about skill and it all about coming in first, not if your eyeliner is running and if the hot guy at the competition is going to notice you.

The stereotype I want to change is “girls don’t game and if they do its girly games or they suck.”

I am here to prove that females who game have more passion and feelings toward gaming than anyone. We put our hearts and souls in to being able to keep up with the guys. To prove that we are not a joke and that we CAN be good. Not just good, but PRO. I know there are people out there sick of the beauty contest held in gaming. NO I’M NOT JEALOUS! I want to make that VERY clear. I don’t care what my competitor looks like. I can tell you I walk down the street feel so much more confident then I used to because I know I am skilled.

Another thing, who cares if not all girls are the BEST at games, if you play and are passionate about what you are doing, then you are a gamer to me. I am looking to change the current outlook on female gamers. Right now we are looked at as “bitchy attention whores” by a large chunk of the gaming community.

I am looking to change where females in gaming is leading. If we keep on the track we are, we are never going to be recognized as true competitors in the gaming arena. Forever will the female gamers be taken as a joke. All I ask is that if you truly hate the typical girl gaming stereotypes and you WANT to work towards a better gaming community.
This is not “Girl Power” movement, there are lots of females in the gaming community who have been positively recognized and more power to them, but I am talking about the normal everyday female gamer that is sick of being categorized. What I am trying to start is a movement towards positive playing, where in-game trash is still a part of the fun, but out of gaming trash talk is trash. Where your ranking is based on skill and skill alone.

I am here to make a stand and say that BEAUTY CONTESTS DO NOT BELONG IN THE GAMING COMMUNITY!

Just play the damn games and have fun. If you don't like what people do, why are you here?

Hmm, Weed need to stop labeling each other, thing is..too many people are apathetic and really don't care, why should we?, Im a old cs player, and i rarely ever seen chicks play, but internet is making everything easier, and things become popular now u can join almost any cs server, and u can find tomboys in them, People need to stop there emotional statements, to me its just another weakness u have..

Although I agree that it should not matter, I see the point Chromo is making. She is concerned about the image these girls are painting for all female gamers, a stereotype. I also think that people are going to profile you no matter what, it's like categorizing personalities to better guide you to people you'll like. Like music, movie or video game genres, a dominate category to generalize your taste, but like all these things, there are people who set themselves apart. Example, I hate sports games but I loved Blitz and Mutant League Football, that completely destroys my perspective of the said genre but I still dislike most of the sports genre.

I guess what I am trying to say is that there isn't anything you can do but personally set yourself apart from the others. It takes a large demographic to change a already established public opinion. Chromo posting this blog raises at least some interest and a lot of awareness, she isn't the only one who wants to re-paint this picture. This is kinda shallow but I honestly didn't read the entire blog, mostly just the comments, but I think I understand the subject.

I don't want to be an ass, but I don't really care. Quite honestly I am sick of this subject. As long as all races and genders are treated the same in a tournament format, I don't see the problem. Win a major tournament and you might have a louder voice, you'll definitely gain respect. These girls in the gaming "beauty" contests will never taste that, but they are part of an entire other demographic, so why put yourself in the same group? Everyone knows they aren't in it for the games or their skill.

Sorry if you disagree with me, that's a mild version of what I think. I treat everyone, male or female, the same until they give me a reason to change that.

topics are only valid when they dont carry the baggage of being hypocritical.

And yet...here we all are, discussing a valid topic that Chromo has brought up. Some do not agree because their opinions differ from Chromo's, and some agree because they can relate to her point. The main point to take away from this is that she put her opinion out there for others to see / comment, not only now, but in the past as well, and it has generated discussion and some ideas.

Unfortunately, in an online atmosphere, if you make one mistake or piss off the wrong person, you're pretty much done. But it's nice to see that some people will still give Chromo a platform to discuss some valid issues.

Um...who cares? The world is not fair, everyone knows this. For instance, most actresses and singers have it better if they're beautiful. They will get more fans and what not. Ummm...for instance, Tila Tequila. No skillz in singing, or acting but somehow she's a hit cause she's attractive.

But I do agree that gaming shouldn't be a beauty contest for girls. But a lot of girls like myself do wear makeup, do like girly stuff, and like taking pictures. I don't think it should matter if girls like doing that or not as long as they have a passion for gaming right?

...eh.

I like video games and make-up.

"if you play and are passionate about what you are doing, then you are a gamer to me." Then, despite the attention I pay to my appearance I'm a gamer, right?

"I am looking to change the current outlook on female gamers. Right now we are looked at as “bitchy attention whores” by a large chunk of the gaming community." Looking to change it with a sort of 'bitchy' post? Eh, rants to not equate to activism.

ilu, not side-taking, just this is sort of silly. The best way to change the outlook of girl gamers being seen as attention skanks is to, well, not acknowledge it and instead combat it with, as you said, "passion for what you're doing."

As far as my gamer tags gamer score -- I have 2 360s, and you know? That's for a reason. I'm not some dumb bimbo who thinks playing 2 hours a week can get her somewhere and lying about the rest. I can probably talk rings around anyone about most video games, that's because I play.

Nor can someone who has never spoken to me begin to bash me for whatever reason.

I'm sick of people always trying to start drama. I don't want to be a part of it. I understand for whatever reason, you don't like me. But the petty drama needs to stop.

As far as my appearence goes, most people understand my personal issues and why I do what I do.

We are all gamers. There's no need to be posting blogs about how girls need to stop posting photos. Because -- everyone does it.

What you don't understand, Navie, is that for Gears of War, if you beat the storymode you get achievements for each level on Casual, Hardcore, and Insane. So it basically shows she's not played through it. She used to be in a clan for Gears of War, so shouldn't she have some online achievements as well? She hasn't even played one ranked match. Nor have I seen her on that game once.

Same with Assassin's Creed, you progress through the game, it's inevitable that you gain achievement points. Not all require you have no life. a lot just mean you actually PLAYED.

I can understand she's your friend and you're both part of that GameGirl thing, so it makes sense you would try to defend, but be realistic when regarding achievements. A lot aren't that hard to get, you just have to like the game enough to PLAY it.

I hate to break it to ya Kayli, but achievements prove you have no life, not skill at gaming. Any numpty with half a brain can sit there and read on teh internets how to achieve pointless, repetitive, time sinking tasks for 20 points each.

Besides, its as I've always said... points, levels, games, hours played... none of that matters so long as the time you do get to play you enjoy. that's what makes a gamer. And if you have a muff, that's what makes a girl gamer.

Nothing you've done proves you're any good at what you claim to love so much. Yeah you've taken pictures with your gaming equipment. You love Gears of War, but haven't you only gotten past the first level..if that? I'm pretty sure you only have the Prison Breakout achivement.

And for someone who adores Assassin's Creed, your 60 achievements don't back it up. You may have the items, but you come off as crap in the game.

Well I could take a gander at how she lumped you into this...

You kind of play yourself off as a larger gamer than you really are :P You're not on XBL very often, and when you are its dashboard or some new game you play a bit of then make a review about.

Plus your pictures are really over photoshopped...you obviously try to use your appearance for popularity.

So any girl who takes photos of themselves automaticly falls under this catagory? Wouldn't that make you a hypcorite?

As far as you bulletin goes,

"lauren/bunny fanboys you can delete me, i don't care if you think they're good"

I'm not exactly sure how you lumped me into this, and I don't really appreciate it.

ya she fails

soo......

You're going to take down every single one of your pics now? I mean, if this is the point you wish to prove, seems only like the logical step towards not being hypocritical. If gaming should be based on skill and skill alone, then there's no reason to have pics up at all I would think. Especially pics full of pouty lips and voluptuous breasticles?

"What I am trying to start is a movement towards positive playing, .... but out of gaming trash talk is trash"

For this sentence to carry weight, you may wanna delete your last blog entry.

Gaming has never been about popularity, but it seems that is changing. Gender discrimination doesn't exist any more in gaming then anything else, when it comes to competitions it's completely fair, you play by the same rules and regulations as the guys. So why are we imagining some kind of unfair sexism?

Marketing is another matter, the Frag Dolls define marketing. Sexism in media will never change.

yer peeeerrrrdy

What happened to the word "tomboy"? Not every girl is a girly girl, and no one degrades that, do they? Not all girls are flower obsessed blah blah like you stated, and people accept that. They can work with tools, etc and hey that's cool! But why when it comes to video games it's so bad?

yeah there's the chauvinists who say "gb2 kitchenz!", but that's not the majority of society is it?

thats how it will always be enough said. Girls are supposed to know about flowers and make up and guys know about cars and video games. That's just all their is to it, that will never change in people.

Sadly, my second most beloved medium is also the most sexiest. I mean G4TV, in 2005, had a special called "Video game vixens", where a panel, led by Hal Sparks, voted on who was the sexiest video game heroine.

For everyone's information, it was Tina from Dead or alive.

And in this visually obsessed gaming atmosphere, groups like "Fragdolls" appear. So of course, if they are to gain any notoriety, they need to be the epitome of "10's" or at least "8's".

Im a man. I enjoy beauty and I am not ashamed to admit that. But i am seriously getting tired of beauty, in men and women, being the deciding factor in prestige. I mean, look at Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendall. He is, by no means, an unattractive man. This is just a case of the media choosing classifying beauty with superiority.

Now i am not saying that he is not a skilled player. Then again, i am also not saying that the Frag Dolls arent skilled either. But what is the media seeing? Are they seeing skill or visiage?

Yeah, weren't they all required to play Counter Strike? Like, what is that? I HATE that game, personally, but I can kick ass at Gears of War or COD4...why not give those a chance too?

"there are no girls on the Internet except for porn."

word...

Honestly who gives a shit? @all

I agree. I'm all for feminism and activism but i'm fed up of reading pretty much the same stuff over and over again in these blogs.

And yes, Console games aren't played much at competitions.. let alone any other game than Counter-Strike Source. I'll be honest CSS is easily the best team-based competition FPS, COD4 feels way too arcadey =/ Quake 3 Arena and UT99 are good competition FPS games.
