MIDNIGHT MOVIE MADDNESS 7/17/2008

The Dark Knight

Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as The Joker.

Let me start by saying, I had originally planned to slam this movie (jokingly) just to stir the pot and get all kinds of hate mail. That was my original plan. Then I saw the film and realized I couldn't even fathom doing a joke like that. That is how awesome this film was. Turned me to not do the joke review I had originally planned. It was going to be awesome, but I couldn't in good conscience go through with it. That said, lets move on.

So we all saw/heard/talked about this movie for over a year. We got teased heavily along the way as well. And it was 100% worth the wait. Beyond any shadow of doubt, this is one of the best films of the year. Has yet to beat out House Of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects, but it is up there with those. This did not disappoint me at all. Even when I was looking at my watch thinking, holy hell it is 2am and I have to be at work at 7am. It kept me in and there. Let me tell you why in my Good/Bad/Rating™.

The Good:

First, Ledger nailed the Joker so well. With the awesome writing going with it as well, I have a hard time trying to think of a way for anyone else to do it one better. The voice, the mannerisms, the insanity, all perfect. The Joker wasn't crazy in a funny way, but he was fucking bug nuts ass crazy. The way he should have always been. No slight to the others who played The Joker, but they never got the put a fucking crate around my head insanity of the character. In this film, they did.

Next up, the links to the other film and pretty much picking up, what I would say, not to far from the Scarecrow/Raz story of the first. Fuck, there were even cameos from the characters that made it to see the next film. These were also no, look there they are in the background cameos either. Full on, this dude is still wandering around Gotham and doing stuff cameos. Connecting the whole new vision all together.

The film also lets the audience use their imagination with a few things, which to me makes some scenes that much better. I mean, by my count there was only one real onscreen death in the whole film. Yes innocent people get attacked and such in the film, but they use great shots and cuts to make you wonder what exactly just happened to him. Which is most likely how they got this down to a PG-13 film. Had they not cut away, I can see it easily an R rating.

The last point I'm going to hit up here, only because I could write all day on this, is that the film is very unpredictable. Much like the mind of The Joker. When you think it is going to go one way, it goes a way that no one could really fathom to come up with. I found myself surprised quite a bit through the whole movie. There was only one thing I was able to call in the film, but it was pretty much a given on what would happen. Something that is usually hard to do with me. I catch and can read things before it happens. So kudos.

The Bad:

Heath is dead. That is the worst part of this film. He was so great at playing The Joker in this film. And it is just horrid that he will not be able to play the character again. It is going to be insanely hard to find someone who portrayed The Joker as well as he did. This is honestly the only bad thing about this film I have. Just that he did so well I would want to see more and now can't.

The Rating:

PWNED The Fucking Shit Of All Movies I have Seen This Year.

I agree, The Batman Movie was mindblowing, excellent, altough there are a lot of Batman villains that havent been on a movie yet, like Killer croc, clayface, Man-bat, scarface, the mad hatter. and i agree , heath ledger took way to seriously the role of the joker, it was excellent.
