As I said in my first impression blog of Soul Calibur IV I haven’t played a fighting game in a long time. SCIV was my first venture into the fighting genre in years and I have to say I’m happy I got this game. Fighting games that I was hesitant to buy at first that are coming out in the future (MK vs DCU, Street Fighter IV, and Tekken 6) I’m now willing to buy without hesitation. This blog isn’t about my new found love of the fighting genre though, so let’s get into the review.
The controls are smooth on the PS3, the graphics are awesome, the sound and music is top notch (where’s my SCIV soundtrack!?!), and the gameplay is superb. My only really complaint is the story. Yes I know this is a fighting game but I was expecting something a little more then what I received. Now I haven’t played with all of the characters but I’ve put a lot of time into Vader and the Apprentice and I’ve got to say they’re awesome. The Star Wars fanboy in me screams with joy every time I play as one of them.
Character creation is pretty sweet too. I don’t know what all the stats and crap mean but I’ve spent at least 3 hours just messing around with different appearances. Online play is pretty nice too. It takes a few minutes to find a match (due to so many people playing) but once you get into one there’s hardly any lag. I’ve had at least ten fights so far and out of all of those only one lagged for a few seconds, the rest of the fight was lag free though.
So my verdict is a 5/5. To fighting game fans I’d say pick it up. To people who have never played a fighting game and want to give one a shot SCIV is a great game to do it with. To my fellow Star Wars nerds buy this game now, Vader is awesome and so is the Apprentice (if Yoda isn’t released as DLC I’ll eventually buy the 360 version too). Over all Soul Calibur IV is a game worth your money and I recommend it.

I'm starting to wonder what kind of difference there is between the PS3 version and the 360 version because I would *not* give the 360 version a 5 out of 5. I'm really not all that impressed with the graphics. There are times when I see clothes poking through the stomachs of the characters to the other side. There have been times when I'm punching someone and it doesn't even look like the hits are connecting but somehow I'm doing damage.
I've been playing this series since day 1. Soul Edge was many a reason of why I faked sick and stayed home from school. SCIV? It just seems too much now. I think there are way too many characters to juggle with. Guest characters? No thanks. I want the originals with the good story. The story SUCKS so bad now. I HATE that when you play "story" mode, you are forced to read paragraph apon paragraph of history...and then the endings are like, 2 seconds long and then a brief sentence that makes the effort of beating story mode seem so pointless.
I agree that the character custom stuff is pretty cool. I enjoyed the Tower for what it was worth...for about 15 minutes.
I got SCIV the day it came out. I traded it the next day and got COD4 and I think I made the right choice.
I'm glad there are people enjoying it though.
