Those are just some of the memorial quotes from BC:R and I can assure you there are more. Now I haven’t completed the story mode yet, the last level is a complete bitch, but I think I’ve played the game long enough to give a review. Let’s start with the story. From what I can tell, having only played a few levels of the original Bionic Commando and reading up on it, BC:R stays true to the original story while making it better. While it never goes to deep into character development like other games you do feel bad for Spencer (the guy you play as) when he reveals something about his past. I hope that in the new Bionic Commando (for PS3, 360, and PC) they give a little more information on if Spencer ever solved the problem because it doesn’t look like it’s going to be answered in the comic.
Anyway let’s move on to the music and sound. Many people, myself included, think one of the best things about BC:R is its music. Really there’s not anything you can complain about with the music, it’s perfect. As far as sound effects and stuff like that it’s good too. The sound of the arm attaching to something sounds real and over all the sound is just wonderful.
Now let’s go to the controls. While some may complain of a lack of jump button it only bothered me for five minutes before I got use to just using the bionic arm. I also didn’t like the default buttons so I changed that around to my liking (there are only three control schemes you can chose from). Over all I found it easier to use the d-pad (I’ve got the game on PS3) for the 2D moments and use the analog stick for the over the head bits. Now while the controls are good it does take a while to get the whole bionic arm thing down. I didn’t really feel comfortable with until about the 3rd or 4th level and even now I still forget I can block incoming shots with the arm.
Now if you’ve seen some of the screen shots for BC:R you probably think it looks goods and I can guarantee you that it looks even better while in action. Some people have complained about it looking to pinkish or something like that but I don’t see it but I usually don’t care how a game looks, just how it plays. Basically takes this portion of the review with a grain of salt, lol. Anyway the character movements are excellent and the rag doll physics when you kill an enemy are good. Over all it looks fantastic (to me).
Now the one thing people should care about the most is up; gameplay. How does it fair? It’s fucking A-W-E-S-O-M-E! The original BC (from what I’ve heard) was a pretty hard game and BC:R is no different. This game will make you want to slam your controller or keyboard against something on several occasions. Now this isn’t the type of frustration that comes from the game cheating or insanely difficult bosses it’s having to time when to use your bionic arm. If you mess up in this game it’s no one’s fault but your own. Over all the gameplay is fun, addictive, and no matter how angry you get you’ll want to come back for more. Now I haven’t had the chance to play co-op with someone nor do the versus mode yet so I can’t comment on those.
In the end Bionic Commando: Rearmed is a fantastic game for new comers and fans of the original. Personally I hope this (along with Mega Man 9) brings the genre of 2D platforming back. Bionic Commando: Rearmed gets 5/5 from me.
Update: I just got through beating the final level of the game and it's still awesome. I was pretty shocked at what happened before the fight with the Leader. Anyway, just wanted to add that.
