Curbstomping Has Never Been So Fun (Dead Space First Impressions)

I picked up Dead Space today and have been playing for probably an hour and a half. The game meets my expectations and more so. I’ve completed the first chapter of the game and so far I’ve had at least three good “scares”. Nothing that made me go “Oh shit!” but more of just being surprised that I jump in my seat. I haven’t encountered any of the fake scare moments yet, except for maybe one. I entered into a room that was having a strobe light effect and expected something to jump out at me, nothing did. So far the “scares” are pretty cool but nothing that’s really made me truly frightened like the first time I saw It as a child (honestly I’m hoping to not have that type of scare because I had nightmares for a week because of that damn movie).

Now onto the combat. The controls (on the PS3) feel really good, they don’t feel cluttered or anything. I’ve opted for making Isaac take less damage for now so the only weapon I’ve used so far is the Plasma Cutter. I keep forgetting that there’s a secondary fire mode for the weapons so I’ve just been using the regular attack, it works pretty well but I’ll have to use the secondary attack soon. Now along with your weapon you also get melee attacks, the first one is where Isaac swings his arm around like a madman and clubs what’s ever in his way with the weapon. The other is the oh so satisfying curbstomp. Every time I come across a body or take down a Necromorph I always make sure to give them a good curbstomping, just to make sure they don’t get back up and they know who the boss is. Honestly though there’s nothing more awesome (so far) then brining one of the Necromorph down with a melee attack and then delivering a curbstomp onto their ugly asses.

As far as the story goes nothing has really been shown yet. I have a sneaking suspicion though that one of the people you come onboard the Ishimura with knows more then they’re letting on. Over all I’m enjoying Dead Space and can’t wait to learn more of the story. Also I will not be playing this game once the sun goes down for I am a coward.
